What is Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School?

In a nutshell it’s a life-drawing event where entertainment meets art.

Dr. Sketchy’s was founded in December 2005 in New York City by Molly Crabapple, an illustrator and former artist’s model. Bored with the sterile classes she had posed for, Molly started Dr. Sketchy’s on the basis of fair pay for models and arty, decadent fun for all.

There are now over 150 Dr Sketchys around the world, all adhering to the same ethos as Mollys original event but each run independently by artistic individuals, no two Dr Sketchy branches are the same!

So what makes Dr Sketchy Nottingham unique?

Our Nottingham branch was established in August 2009 and is brought to you by local performance and art aficionados Scarlett Daggers and Charlotte Thomson.

Dr Sketchy Nottingham is a 3 hour afternoon event, held every other month in Nottingham city centre. We welcome EVERYONE to come and try their hand at a bit of drawing in a fun, relaxed environment. Professional artists, art students, nervous beginners and 'haven’t drawn in 30 years' folks, we welcome you all to Dr Sketchy!

You will be treated to the unique opportunity to draw some of the UK (and worlds) best performers and their dazzling costumes, from the world of burlesque, circus, cabaret, drag queens, carnival freaks, fetish divas and any other interesting and curious people we meet along the way! As well as posing for your drawing pleasure, our models perform live for your entertainment! We also have a DJ playing top tunes from many eras and genres to entertain you as you draw and to keep the atmosphere light and fun we run quirky drawing competitions throughout the event to win goodies from our sponsors.

We also hold extra special 'one off' Dr Sketchy events to coincide with festivals, exhibitions and special occasions in Nottingham, in addition to the regular bi-monthly event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring?

The bare minimum you will need is
a sketch pad with at least 10 pages, from A4 to A2 size with a hard back (tables are provided but we don’t provide drawing boards)

Pencils

A pencil sharpener

An eraser

You can also bring any dry media of your choice- charcoals, pastels, pencil crayons, felt tip pens, fineliners etc. We have some space for easels at the back of the room if you wish to bring one. There is also a limited availability of power points if you wish to bring a laptop and graphics tablet. If you’re unsure please just email us in advance to discuss!

Please DO NOT bring wet or messy media such as oil paints!

Can I take photographs?

If you are a professional photographer looking for portfolio shots then the answer is no, we already have several photographers who take photos of each event.

If you’re an artist and wish to take photos to draw from at a later date we’re fairly lenient but generally encourage you to get in touch with our photographers after the event, they’re usually more than happy to let you use the shots they have taken as reference material.

I’ve never seen burlesque before, what should I expect?

Our performances and models vary wildly but you can expect to see ladies (and gents) in fabulous costumes of all kinds dancing to anything from jazz to rock ‘n roll.  Our audience is generally equal parts male and female and the atmosphere is fun, silly and upbeat with lots of cheering and wooping. We believe in old fashioned, saucy good fun, not sleaze!

Our performers/models are never fully topless or bottomless and are never completely nude.  Expect to see a good dose of innuendo, a bit of striptease, shimmying bottoms clad in sparkly g-strings, corsets, high heels, stockings, pasties/nipple tassles and lots of glitter and feathers and glamour. Some burlesque performers are outright sexy, others are tongue in cheek in a ‘Carry On’ film sense, and we also feature singers, vaudeville and circus acts. If you’re still nsure and want to ask us about a particular show we’re always happy to answer your queries.

Can I bring my children?

Sorry our events are strictly over 18’s only unless otherwise stated, due to the license of our venue and the saucy content of our shows.
